Please fill out the registration form Please fill out the registration form and we will e-mail you prior to each academic quarter (approximately early August for Fall Quarter, October for Winter Quarter, and January for Spring Quarter) to confirm your interest and availability. If you are paired with a student shadower during a given quarter, the student will be contacting you to initiate an introductory meeting.
We ask that physicians commit to mentoring a student for one academic quarter. Physicians who enjoy participating in SIMS can opt to continue as a mentor the following quarter. SIMS students register for a 1-unit course and are required to meet with their mentor at least four times in order to pass the course. The duration of each shadowing session is determined by the physician and the student.
Yes. Prior to shadowing, students attend a mandatory orientation that includes HIPAA training, review of SHC/LPCH's Code of Conduct, and documentation of immunizations. Students also receive guidance in professional conduct and attire. The SIMS program and orientation materials have been reviewed by the Director of Compliance at Stanford Hospitals and Clinics.
All sophomore, junior, and senior undergraduates at Stanford University may apply to SIMS, and there are no course prerequisites. Some students may already be applying to medical school, while others may seek a shadowing experience to help them decide whether or not to pursue a health profession.
We suggest that students meet with their physician mentor prior to shadowing to set a schedule and to briefly share their academic background and interest in medicine. This information will allow you to tailor your mentoring relationship appropriately.
Stanford Hospital requires that students remain with their assigned physician mentor at all times while they are shadowing in the hospital. If you become unavailable during the shadowing session, the student is required to wait elsewhere until you become available again. The student may not shadow another physician or a medical student.
If the student does not notify you about an absence, please let the SIMS Coordinator know as soon as possible. We will ensure that such events do not become commonplace.
Please contact your student directly to reschedule. There is no need to contact us.
SIMS is advised by the School of Medicine and coordinated by the Stanford Premedical Association and Undergraduate Advising and Research. Please feel free to contact the SIMS Student Coordinator with questions or comments.
